Finding out that your breast cancer has progressed can be upsetting and frightening, but getting your treatment plan in place can help restore a sense of confidence and calm. Your doctor will discuss your treatment options, and the right one for you will depend on a variety of factors, including your age, overall health, and the results of certain tests. For example, a test called a biopsy can determine if your tumor is HER2-positive, meaning that it has high levels of a protein that promotes the spread of breast cancer. In that case, you would be a candidate for HER2-positive breast cancer treatments such as trastuzumab (Herceptin) and others. However, many patients are not candidates for these medicines and will require other forms of treatment.
Your treatment plan will also depend on the stage of your cancer, which is how doctors describe the extent of a malignancy. If you have been diagnosed with stage 3 or stage 4 breast cancer, or metastatic breast cancer, it’s particularly important for you to understand all of your treatment options.
